Frontline Socialist Party Propaganda Secretary Pubudu Jagoda says that the government will not be introducing an interim budget on the 29th of January.
Instead the government will be taking measures in reducing the prices of certain goods which will be announced by Minister of Finance at the parliament.
Jagoda stated that this was said during a recent meeting at parliament. He also said that Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala had requested for a debate on the issue on January 30th. According to him, the steps taken by the government to reduce prices on essential goods will be taking a toll on tax revenue.
If tax releases are given through a special statement instead of a budget, they could easily be reapplied whenever the government wants, Jagoda explained. If they are done through a budget, it is not as easy as that to repeal the tax concessions, he added.
Furthermore, the government should also explain the tax policy to the public, Jagoda stressed. The current policy is that 80 percent of the tax revenue is earned from the poor people. The government has to explain if this will change. For this to happen, an interim budget proposal is essential, Jagoda pointed out.
